Profile:

Professor Gary Entrican is Principal Research Scientist at Moredun Research Institute. He holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Edinburgh.

Research and links to the UoA:

Entrican leads and manages research investigating immune regulation in ruminants with particular relevance to chlamydial abortion in sheep. His research includes investigation of host-pathogen interactions that lead to chlamydial persistence and cause disease and evaluation of vaccine candidates to prevent ovine enzootic abortion. Research extends to comparative immunology of chlamydial infections in sheep, cattle and humans and ruminant intracellular pathogens.

Research funding is acquired collaboratively with colleagues within the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine. Current, externally-funded research projects joint-awarded with the submitting UoA include a BBSRC Industrial Partnership Award (The route to identification of immunological correlates of protection in ruminants, 2012-15) and two BBSRC CASE studentships: (Inflammasome activation in ruminant, Chlamydia abortus-infected cells; Neonatal vaccination: role for innate immune cell interactions in BCG vaccination, both 2011-15).

Research on impact of chlamydial infection on livestock reproductive capability has led to collaboration on impact of chlamydial infection on human reproduction, funded by Wellbeing of Women (Aberrant prokinectin expression as cause for ectopic pregnancy: effect of Chlamydia trachomatis and smoking, 2008-2010).

Profile:

Professor John Fazakerley is Director of The Pirbright Institute, Surrey. The Pirbright Institute is a centre of excellence in research and surveillance of virus diseases of farm animals and viruses that spread from animals to humans. He is also a Visiting Professor at The Roslin Institute, the University of Edinburgh and Visiting Fellow, Nuffield Dept. of Medicine, Oxford University.

His research focus is on defining interactions of arboviruses (particularly alphaviruses) with innate and adaptive immunity in both vertebrate hosts and arthropod vectors.

He was the inaugural convenor of The Roslin Institute’s strategic research programme “Pathogenesis and resistance in viral diseases of livestock”. His own group’s research at Roslin is strategically related to the work of The Pirbright Institute.
