This 90,000 word monograph is based on extensive research which was carried out over several years, supported by the Wellcome Trust and the AHRC. To reconstruct the history of the eugenics movement in this period, detailed research was carried out in a number of archives at the Wellcome Library. Numerous scientific papers and textbooks in psychiatry, genetics, and social policy were studied in conjunction with a wide range of literary texts. The monograph draws on over a hundred and sixty primary sources, listed in the Select Bibliography.
