Quasi-dynamic visualization of crack propagation and bridging evolution in Si3N4 and SiC ceramics by mechano-luminescence
A collaboration outcome between Kibble, Stanford and Kim (Kyungpook University, South Korea) while Kim was at Wolverhampton (1/09/2008 to 31/08/2009). The technique has wider application than ceramics, e.g. selective laser melted (SLM) TiAl intermetallic being processed at the University of Wolverhampton. Standard fracture toughness (FT) characterisation of SLM materials is inappropriate as components have thin walls. Use of mechanoluminescence (ML) coatings offer an alternative to conventional FT testing as the entire crack process to failure is measured, instead of FT post-mortem analysis, providing the alternative characterisation necessary. Further collaboration, involving ML, with Kim will link with the SLM processing work.
