Additional information

Figures from this paper were reproduced in the latest edition of “Plant Roots: The Hidden Half” (Eds A Eshel & T Beeckman, 4th edition, 2013: ISBN-10: 1439846480) and presented in Keynote papers at the “Rhizosphere 3” meeting in Perth, Australia (2011) and the 2011 Prescott Lecture (Adelaide). The work led directly to MRC-EPSRC-BBSRC “Discipline Hopper” grant (G0701965) on root and worm penetration of soil. The experiments described in the paper were performed in Dundee by A. Vollsnes (visiting on a PhD fellowship from the Research Council of Norway) in research initiated and supervised by Bengough.
