<22>The definitive article on the NECA system. NECA generates multimodal dialogues between embodied conversational agents. The article introduces the concept of fully generated scripted dialogue, and a “monotonic” way of performing this type of generation (using the multimodal representation language RRL) that allows seamless integration of language, speech and body language. At Aberdeen, the paper has led to 15,000 Euros of funding from Nokia for an MSC by Research on applications for mobile phones. Elsewhere, the paper has contributed to EPSRC funding (Dr. Piwek, Open University, CODA project) and is influencing projects (e.g., EPOCH, CrAg).
