Adhesive and conformational behaviour of mycolic acid monolayers
The concept of polymer physics and chemistry was introduced to interpret the microbial cell attachment and adhesion. The work led to an invitation to contribute to Faraday Discussion 139 at York (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/B717046G). Z Zhang was invited to present this work in a variety of occasions including a sandpit event (http://gtr.rcuk.ac.uk/project/5F42F156-AAA3-44F2-9504-A6D09EE85DC0) which provides justification for the follow-up EPSRC Research Grant EP/I016589/1 ‘BioEngineering from first principles’ (£201K). This work confirms the potential of rhodococcus species for industrial application to clean up sites of oil pollution as recognized by UK, Belgium, and South African researchers (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.plipres.2012.05.002).
