Additional information

Significant new contributions have been made in understanding the physics of separated-reattached flows. In particular, the so called low-frequency flapping, observed in several experimental studies, was not seen under 2% free-stream turbulence; thus indicating strongly that this low-frequency mode may only appear in the case of turbulent separation and not transitional cases, where flow is still laminar at separation. In addition, the study shows that the free shear layer under 2% free-stream turbulence starts to become unstable due to the same mechanism (Kelvin-Helmholtz instability) as in the nearly zero free-stream turbulence case.
