Significance of output:

This paper was a the first application of a new shell element, originally developed for modelling biological structures, to model coupled fluid structure interactions of downwind sails such as spinnakers. CFD was coupled to a structural model to more accurately model the realistic shapes these sails adopt due to phenomenon such as wrinkling.
