Wavelet analysis of loads on a flexible ship model traveling in large-amplitude waves
Significance of output:
Ships in unrestricted service encounter large waves that induce transient, high-level stresses on ship structures. Characterising the contribution of different hydrodynamic loads (e.g. harmonic responses vs water entry) to structural response allows estimation of their relative importance, subsequently allowing predictions of dangerous situations and design of structural modifications. Identifying such contributions from model testing is difficult with traditional Fourier analysis techniques. This paper demonstrates the applicability of alternative signal processing techniques in this field, as a result of collaboration between China Ship Scientific Research Centre where the model testing was undertaken and the University where the analysis technique was developed.
