Additional information

This book is based on an area of increasing significance for researchers in media, communication and politics. Taking a critical look at claims, developments and initiatives linking Civil Society Organisations, new media and democracy, it is based on research carried out over several years: involving interviews, participant observation and desk research. The book combines both a broad analysis of trends in Africa and a close focus on two countries. There is currently very limited availability of book-length academic work focusing on civic networks and their use of new media (ICTs) for electoral and reform politics in Africa. This book therefore provides new knowledge in this area as most of the recent focus has mainly been on events in North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and USA. As a result of this research, Mudhai was an invited speaker on new media, civil society and elections at the ICT and Civic Engagement in Nigeria conference in Abuja, Nigeria (www.e-nigeria.org), a collaborative event organised by Harvard University’s Berkman Centre for Internet and Society, Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Nigeria’s Digital Bridge Institute and the US National Democratic Institute, and sponsored by MacArthur Foundation.
