This single-authored book is based on extensive and wide-ranging primary source research, including thousands of pages of government documents, White House tape recordings, oral history interviews, the papers of leading civil rights organizations, major US newspapers and newsmagazines, autobiographies, and the private and political papers of numerous politicians and activists. It was supported by research-funding from the Roosevelt Study Center in Middleburg and is the first single-volume monograph on this subject coming in at over 120,000 words.
