Dynamic simulation of crack initiation and propagation in cross-ply laminates by DEM
A micro-scale particulate model is first used to simulate stress singularities in fibre reinforced composite with initial matrix cracks. The originality lies in its capability of capturing all forms of damage simultaneously and predicting stiffness reduction due to propagation of micro-cracks and delamination. The new approach has attracted both academic and industrial interest from biological physics researchers and software developer. Scientists and engineers from Lancaster, Manchester, Liverpool Universities, KCL, Australian national University and ITASCA of USA, have been working together on an EPSRC sponsored collaborative project on applying the method for modelling mechanical contraction of human heart muscles.
