Numerical simulation and experimental study of a two-stage reciprocating compressor for condition monitoring
This paper presents a new approach for fault diagnostics of reciprocating machines based on instantaneous angular speed (IAS). Two stage reciprocating compressors were modelled under different operating conditions. In-cylinder pressure was measured using a conventional intrusive PZT pressure transducers and the IAS was measured using a much cheaper optical encoder. The IAS was found to be as sensitive as the intrusive pressure measurement and is preferred because of its non-intrusive nature. This work was the first of its type and has been used (by e.g. QinetiQ) to produce inexpensive and reliable monitoring systems for rotating machinery.
