Modelling the shape and thermal dynamics of Ni superalloy rings during spray forming Part 1: Shape modelling - Droplet deposition, splashing and redeposition
This describes a new, highly complex numerical model for the simulation of dynamic shape evolution of Ni superalloy rings during spray forming by incorporating the physics of droplet splashing and redeposition. It was validated against extensive laboratory experiments. It safeguards the UK’s lead in this important materials manufacturing technology. The research was an essential element in the establishment of the £4.5m EPSRC IMRC in Liquid Metal Engineering (EP/H026177/1), and led to the winning of two projects funded respectively by (1) Baosteel (3rd largest steel maker in the world) (£254k; 2012-2015); and (2) Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (£700k, 2012-2015).
