Isolated word recognition of silent speech using magnetic implants and sensors
This paper presents the science underpinning the Permanent Magnet Articulography (PMA) method of silent speech recognition and demonstrates the excellent performance achieved, i.e.95% recognition from a vocabulary of 57 isolated words. This is significantly better than all other silent speech interfaces, which typically achieve 70% recognition. The work received significant attention in the media, including an article in New Scientist (http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21028084.600-headset-gives-a-voice-to-the-voice-boxless.html). The research is now funded by NIHR (£600k), and a unique headset has been developed to monitor motion of the articulators.
