Double-weighted statement

This 378-page monograph is the chief output of a project that occupied the author for eight years from starting his doctoral work in 1998, and is much more expansive and detailed than the thesis of 2002. The text falls into two book-length sections of three and four chapters (ca. 65,000 words each): Part I reassesses Ammianus’ first-person narratives in the light of their allusivity; Part II is a wide-ranging and systematic study of how Ammianus engages intertextually with earlier classical literature. Research involved a detailed knowledge of a considerable body of other primary sources and the corresponding secondary literature.
