Double-weighted statement

This 120,000-word book on art and literature in London in the early nineteenth century is an attempt to correlate social class, the urban environment, and literary and artistic form. Each chapter is a case study exploring the relationship between a key primary text, or texts, and a particular urban milieu, such as the suburbs, lodging houses, the periodical press, the London streets, house museums and debtors’ prisons. Focused on the neglected transitional period between the Romantic and Victorian periods, this study is the result of ten years’ original research, and opens up significant new ground for future scholars.
