Evaluation of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Coupled Fluid-Solid Modeling for a Direct Transfer Preswirl System
This research brought together leading computer modelling capability for engine thermal analysis and leading high Reynolds number turbine disc heat transfer measurements to evaluate CFD-based methods. The coupled CFD/solid modelling avoids inaccuracies incurred when deducing heat transfer rates from temperature measurements, as in common practice. The results give insight into cooling system performance, and show limitations and strengths of the coupled fluid/solid analysis technique. This technique is progressively being adopted in industry and this validation supports its use in design and within the engine certification process. Javiya now works for Rolls-Royce.
