Additional information

<30> Originality: This paper develops a methodology based on loss network models with overflow for capacity planning in a hospital neonatal unit. Using Markovian assumptions, closed form expressions for the steady-state probabilities are derived. This work was done in collaboration with University College London and UCL Hospital.

Significance: The paper proposes a generic solution to key capacity planning issues in neonatal intensive care units, also applicable in telecommunication systems. Results were used by the UCLH unit to plan their cot capacity.

Rigour: Mathematical formulations and derivations support findings, along with testing on real data. Results published in leading peer-reviewed journal.
