Interior tools interior tactics : debates in interiors theory and practice
Milligan’s co-edited book (and four book chapters) seeks to advance intellectual and creative understanding across interior research, industry and education by critically debating, sharing and redefining new interior tools and tactics for 21st century practice. Technological tools and digital fabrication tactics mark a sea change between traditional and experimental methods revealing a larger set of changes affecting the discipline: digital tools increasingly drive spatial tactics but collide when confronted with realities of traditional construction. Shared theoretical, pedagogic and practice insights help map future research collaboration potential across those sectors.
Knowledge is enhanced through six core debates; professional tactics explores the contextual management of commercial projects; educational tools & tactics discusses the challenges and opportunities in an age of rapid change; digital tools & tactics examines fabrication processes and possibilities; workplace critiques the tactical way designers and users co-create and subvert work and study places; modeling tools & tactics exposes problems in, and strategies for, representations of interiors; alteration reexamines tactics and processes involved in adapting ‘host’ buildings, whilst material tools & tactics provokes questions of material application, innovation and development.
In contrast to highly specialised research that reinforce division rather than connection core themes bring the interior research, industry and education sectors together to examine insights, methods and applicability. A peer review process led to international contributions from Weinthal, L., (AfterTaste NYC), Preston, J., (‘Intimus’ ’06 /‘AD Architectural Design: Interior Atmosphere’ ’08’); and Scott, F., (‘On Altering Architecture’ ’08) amongst others.
Rigour is reflected in participation of international professional and research organisations- e.g. British Institute of Interior Design, Chartered Society of Designers, European Council of Interior Architects, Materials & Design Exchange and Interior Design/Interior Architecture Educators Association, and Interior Educators representing 40 institutions. Output is now an key international text following book launch in London, July 2011.
