Additional information

Modular Sculpture explores with the notion of modularity in cast concrete public art from the 70’s and 80’s. Once again taking a literary starting point in the literary travails of Flaubert’s Bouvard and Pecuchet the piece mocks the monumentality of concrete as well as reflecting the absurd disparity between theory and praxis, which underscores everything Flaubert’s characters do. The photographic series was made to show the objects theoretical modularity. In fact it had to be supported form behind as it were a stage prop. The surface is an innovative mix of acrylic resin and various concentrations of ink, once again contributing to the illusion of solidity. Dangling from various parts are resin casts of French charcuterie. The four photos went on to form part of a work made in collaboration with Daniel Dewar and Gregory Giquel (recently winners of the Prix Marcel Duchamp), The Adobe Gang, 2009, Modular Sculpture (Blueberries, Runner Beans, Borage, Raspberries), 2009, Expanded Composition n°6, 1986-2009. This series of photographs were developed over a number of months, we each made sculptural objects and the collaborated in their staging and evolution into new images. ‘Modular Sculpture’ appears in several different combinations across four images. A work of Dewar and Giquel in another and finally a collaborative photo of a sculpture by an invented artist persona ‘Aiden Fynch’. The work was part of the group show, INSIDERS - PRATIQUES, USAGES, SAVOIR FAIRE, at the CAPC in Bordeaux.

In its fixed form the sculpture was included in Peter's Prix Ricard presentation (reviewed in Le Monde and ParisArt) after having been shown at Cell Projects in London.
