Additional information

<24> This paper was the first to use statistical-learning theory to provide an alternative abstraction for Artificial Immune Systems as an alternative to the universally accepted shape-space theory, unifying concepts from biology and machine-learning. By applying a rigorous approach rooted in basis decomposition the computational properties of the abstraction can be derived in contrast to the weak metaphorical arguments commonly used in the field.

The paper was one of the first contributions to a new body of work attempting to underpin the AIS field with a sound theoretical foundation.
