146-GHz millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber photonic wireless transmission system.
In this collaboration between UCL, Alcatel-Thales III-V Lab, France and the University of Madrid, UCL-patented high output power THz photodiode technology was used to fabricate 200 GHz bandwidth photodiodes at Alcatel-Thales, which were used for direct transmission of 146 GHz wireless signals at UCL. Such systems will enable the wireless transmission of data at rates of 40 Gb/s and above, two orders of magnitude greater than current WiFi systems can achieve. EPSRC subsequently awarded a £6.5 million Programme Grant (EP/J017671/1, PI:A. J. Seeds) to pursue this and related THz research with the Universities of Cambridge and Leeds.
