Impact of nitrate on bacterial structure and function in injection-water biofilms.
Significance of output:
The cost of corrosion to the oil and gas industry when oil becomes “soured” by microbially produced H2S is an estimated $2b p.a. (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/bookseries/01672991/151). This joint industry project (JIP), supported by Oil Plus Ltd and Maersk Oil, demonstrated that nitrate reduced souring and general corrosion by altering the microbial ecology. The technology is used by Aquateam Consulting; “the implementation of the technology adapted from the injection water biofilm project has increased the competence of our company in the field of microbial ecology” (carsten.schwermer@aquateam.no). This work contributed to a successful JIP between the Norwegian Research Council and 8 oil companies (http://www.touchoilandgas.com/ebooks/A1uau5/EPOGReview92/resources/105.htm).
