The South Korean Film Renaissance : Local Hitmakers, Global Provocateurs
The South Korean Film Renaissance (264pp) is the first single-authored book in English that examines recent transformations in the Korean film industry in economic, cultural and aesthetic terms. The book covers a wide range of trends in commercial and festival-driven films including blockbusters, gangster cinema, youth films, romantic comedy, and “well-made” films. The research was conducted over many years, requiring multiple trips to the Korean Film Archive in Seoul due to the corpus of films discussed and the data collected. Appendices include box office rankings, numbers of films produced and released, market shares, and international award-winning films between 1986-2006.
