The paper describes a new methodology for heat sink design that challenged 40 years of practice within the industry. AMD undertook independent characterization of prototypes at their research centers and confirmed the design resulted in ~half the volume, half the weight, 18dB lower acoustics and reduced energy consumption compared to existing solutions. An embodiment of the technology was patented (US 20120250258 A2 and supporting applications) and licensed to AMD and AVC through University of Limerick technology transfer office. I received two awards for translation of research from University to industry from Enterprise Ireland.
