<24>This paper is the first to explore conditional validity of conformal predictors, which is important in practical machine learning. Previous work only discussed unconditional validity, which is achieved automatically for conformal predictors. An initial version of some of the material in this paper was presented at AMCL 2012, and was selected by the Programme Committee for inclusion in the Special Issue of Machine Learning with the citation: "one of the best papers of ACML 2012" for its "excellent research". The extended journal version underwent another round of peer review.
