This paper was selected as one of the 4 outputs which contributed to the first author being awarded The Leverhulme Prize for contributions as young investigator in Computational Mechanics in November 2011. The paper has attracted great interest as it investigates the formation of wrinkles in single-layer graphene sheets using an equivalent atomistic continuum hyperelastic theory for nano-indentation. Critically, this research shows that geometrical nonlinearities play a key role in the development of wrinkles in graphene. This research was carried out as part of the Centre of NanoHealth at SwanseaUniversity (http://www.swan.ac.uk/nanohealth/ ), funded through the European Regional Development Fund.
