Fidget
This installation toured the UK during summer 2012, and it was funded by the Wellcome Trust with a grant of £180,000. Fidget (see: http://fidgetproject.org.uk/) is a dynamic, live action gaming environment that engages creatively with the need for the public to understand the implications of their lifestyle choices and its impact upon obesity. Within this architectural installation, visitors participate in series of quirky activities to learn about the difference that even moderate movement can make to their lives and wellbeing. There are six modules each containing an item of furniture and a television that offer the participant an opportunity to view short films, but only if they undertake some level of minimal exercise. Using fidgeting to signal the ways in which even small incremental movements can improve health, the installation aims to encourage people to make simple changes in their everyday lives in order to boost activity levels and benefit their overall fitness. Embodying scientific research within play, Fidget generated public and press debate around active lifestyles and wellbeing as well as highlighting the positive role and benefits for the community that an alliance between art installation and serious health care issues can bring in terms of a greater awareness about obesity.
