Additional information
Glass corrosion is frequently regarded as a predominantly cosmetic issue, e.g. for architects and dishwasher manufacturers; it is now, however, also a major issue for the efficiency of solar panels. The reaction between water and sodium ions at the surface of the glass, which constitutes corrosion and causes critical loss of transparency, are well-modelled by a novel numerical technique using cellular automata and as a result strategies for corrosion inhibition, especially using zinc ions, can be optimised. These strategies have been adopted by Pilkington plc.
