This paper reports on the first research to consider the parametric variation of critical input parameters used in the specification of smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems utilised in the built environment. The methods examined were those internationally accepted in current guidance, but based on research carried out in the 1970’s. The research identified variances in critical outputs, when the same geometric building configuration was considered, identifying the need for more experimental research in this area. Subsequently this led to a collaborative research proposal , for experimental research, with the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and the University of Edinburgh.
