Work reported in the paper, part of one of several European projects on outdoor testing of building components to determine their thermal performance, emphasised the importance of quality control in testing to achieve consistent results by different organisations. This theme has been taken up by IEA Annex 58 with the objective of developing quality procedures for testing leading to better thermal performance analysis. The project is developing the necessary knowledge, tools and networks to achieve reliable in situ dynamic testing and data analysis methods that can be used to characterise the actual energy performance of building components and whole buildings.
