This paper was the main research output of the EPSRC’s ISSUES Project (when employed at Heriot-Watt University) (EP/E026362/1) to transfer knowledge from projects funded by its Sustainable Urban Environments programme to practitioners and policy makers. The results informed the development of a series of innovative knowledge transfer events held at the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Thames Gateway development. The project also supported the development of a not-for-profit consultancy.
