Double-weighted statement

Belfast Boys should be double-weighted on two grounds: ‘The presentation of a critical insight or argument which was dependent upon the completion of a lengthy period of data collection’ and ‘The collection and analysis of a considerable body of material’. Just part of the research involved over 17,000 service records (no more than 200 can be worked through each day), and another part covered three daily newspapers for every day from September 1912 to December 1919. Moreover, such an approach has never been attempted for any part of the UK so the research process was developed afresh.
