Conflict and Conversion : Catholicism in Southeast Asia, c. 1500-1700
This monograph necessitated the collection and analysis of a large body of source material located in archives around Europe and Asia. In total over 18 months were spent on archival research alone. In addition I surveyed a vast quantity of sixteenth and seventeenth century printed material in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and French libraries. The work itself involved an extensive and complex survey of the activity of four major religious orders with their own historiographies and manuscript traditions. It also involved a complex analytical comparison of religious belief and the history of conversion three different regions of Southeast Asia.
