English abstract
This study of Anne de Pisseleu, the maîtresse en titre of Francis I during the 1530s and 1540s, examines the full range of her political influence. Written in the framework of recent studies (Wanegffelen; Wilson-Chevalier) that have sought to delineate the nature and range of female power in the Renaissance period, the study is the most detailed examination of de Pisseleu’s political influence to date. It seeks to establish the range of her familial and clientage networks and examines her attempts to exercise the power of a councillor in fact, though not in name, during the King’s later years.
