Additional information

This paper describes findings related to user interface requirements for live electronic music arising from research conducted as part of the first three-year phase of the EU-funded Integra project. A number of graphical user interface (GUI) prototypes developed during the Integra project initial phase are described and conclusions drawn about their design and implementation. The evidence presented supports the authors’ argument that domain-specific HCI methodologies should play a much more significant role in developing software for musicians. As end users, musicians need to be involved in the design, development and testing of new software in a more integrated way. Building on the concepts presented in the paper the authors founded Integra Lab, a research lab at Birmingham Conservatoire that focuses on musician-computer interaction, in order to continue the development of the Integra Live software after the end of the funded period of the Integra project.
