Additional information

Glass coatings provide superior density and corrosion resistance but inferior wear resistance to those of ceramics. This novel research shows that introducing silicon nitride particles into a borosilicate glass significantly improves the wear resistance of plasma-sprayed coatings. The work uses precursor powder in which each particle is a composite of sub-micrometre silicon nitride in borosilicate glass. The research opens up potential applications for a new family of coatings requiring combined wear and corrosion resistance, such as chemical processing equipment and marine environments.
