A study of transient response of initially stressed composite sandwich folded plates
Significance of output:
By introducing folds into a flat plate, highly efficient load carrying ability and stiffness can be achieved over the use of the equivalent unfolded flat structure. Taking further advantage of composite sandwich engineering, these folded structures are being utilised across sector; from aerospace to maritime engineering. However, accurate computations on their dynamic response are lacking which is limiting their ultimate effectiveness. This paper shows the development of a new finite element formulation that can not only rapidly evaluate transient response but also solve the dynamic problem when the structure is initially preloaded, typically during fabrication and installation.
