English abstract

This article analyses forms of self-perception and self-presentation among Roman land surveyors. It takes into account the micro- and macro-structures of the writings of agrimensores, including the authors’ own reflections on the terminological, stylistic and pragmatic characteristics of their works. Special attention is given to remarks concerning the intellectual predisposition of land surveyors (i.e. the need for a specific educational programme) and the ethical implications of the discipline.
