Photoluminescence for quantitative non-destructive evaluation of thermal barrier coating erosion
Describes the development of a functionally structured thermal barrier coating that enables the quantitative measurement of coating erosion such as might result in an aircraft engine from sand particle or volcanic cloud ingestion. The work was supported by the Centre for Defense Enterprise and conducted in collaboration with Southside Thermal Sciences an SME and spin-out company set up to exploit the advanced phosphor based sensor developed by Prof Heyes. The work resulted in the award of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Whittle Reactionaries Prize 2011 to the EngD student working on the project.
