Additional information

This paper features a novel Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging technique, Direct Neuronal Detection (DND), developed through interdisciplinary research between Departments. Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Academic Radiology, which aims to image direct neuronal signals through their perturbation of the scanner biasing magnetic field. Here the traditional Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) imaging technique which relies on hemodynamic changes is compared with our new technique. When this method is corroborated, it will revolutionise the ability of MRI to interrogate neuronal activity as it will have the temporal resolution of Electro-Encephalography combined with the high spatial resolution and deep penetration of MRI.
