'The Lombard League 1167-1225' required the collection and study of an extensive body of material, as well as the mastery and contextualisation of various typologies of primary sources and scholarship in Italian, German, English and French. The primary sources (in Latin and some in Greek) comprised records, chronicles, poems, letters, as well as juridical and rhetorical treatises. No collection of the records of the League exists. Thus the archival resources of more than twenty-five Italian cities had to be scanned and local historiography studied. Primary sources from Germany, England, France, and Byzantium were also extensively used.
