Cloud and landscape 2011

Cloud is a sound installation that works with electromagnetic induction. The cloud is a hanging structure made of c.1000m of black electrical cable that is not only a visual object but also a sound sculpture. Audience members are given custom-made headphones that allow them to explore the hidden acoustic world of the cloud. This work continues Kubisch’s research into electromagnetic conduction but brings the recordings into a gallery context.

Sound from the cloud is apprehended through a system of electromagnetic induction. The sounds that the audience or listeners are able to hear once they are wearing their custom-made headphones are electrical waves produced by digital communication systems, security installations and other dense electrical fields including data processing centers, offices, airports, shopping areas and server rooms. There are twelve channels of audio present in the electromagnetic conduction system. Through active interaction with the work the listeners create their own composition, mixing and blending the twelve channels of sound as they walk around it, turn their heads, bend or sit down or stay in transit. The curiosity of the participating listeners plays an essential role in the work and it is only through their participation, their listening, that the work is completed.
