Automatic extraction of leaf characters from herbarium specimens

<22>Recent developments in the analysis of herbarium specimens have generated an increasing need to analyse images rather than specimens, and a desire to extract information and identify or classify species using the images directly. This paper is the first to address this pressing need, and describes the development and testing of a system to enable automated extraction of information from whole herbarium specimen images. Much progress has been made recently in leaf-shape image analysis, but herbarium specimens have been largely neglected until this paper. The paper is published in the most highly respected international journal in botanical taxonomy.
