<19>The considerable scale of this study – we analysed 44 CAPTCHA schemes deployed by O(1000) financial institutions worldwide and used by O(100,000,000) online banking customers – illustrates its significant real-world impact. Our work is also technically novel, using a general-purpose CAPTCHA breaking network for all CAPTCHA schemes, and, unlike all previously analysed CAPTCHAs, the three we analysed are not used for login. Instead, they are used for verification of online transactions. For these CAPTCHAs, a new and previously unused image processing technique, image inpainting, was employed to assist the CAPTCHA forgery process. ACSAC (2010 acceptance rate: 17.2%) is highly competitive.
