<23>This paper introduces the “V-unit” for video summarization, an original concept approach that led to the winning entry in the 2008 NIST Annual Worldwide Contest on Video Retrieval (TRECVID). The V-unit is a basic content unit of video, extracted by the novel technique of repeated segmentation and monitoring motion. Thus a representative sample of the video can be automatically extracted, enabling efficient search and summarisation for editors. It underpinned the world’s first interactive broadcasting system, trialled via set-top boxes by the Austrian public service broadcaster ORF, and focus is now on improving cost-effectiveness.
