Additional information

The research proposes a solution to the so-called ‘dry drains’ problem, which has challenged the international building design community to deliver sustainable water management (www.drydrains.com). It highlights the importance of understanding the transient nature of flows to ensure that water conservation and broader sustainability objectives are met. The success of the modelling concept applied here led to the award of EPSRC project EP/F038143/1, £297k (Partners: Arup, World Plumbing Council, National Archives of Scotland).
