Additional information

This paper represents a comprehensive experimental study of the physical mechanisms that play a role in the aerofoil trailing edge tonal noise generation in some fan-based applications that operate at moderate Reynolds numbers. An improved understanding of the noise mechanisms enabled the author to successfully achieve a 20dB tonal noise reduction by the trailing edge serrations (a nature-inspired technology). The author was invited to present the results at the LG Electronics Seoul’s research laboratory in 2012. The simplicity of the noise control technique developed in this study is expected to attract interests from other fan companies.
