Double-weighted statement

This is the first book-length study of its topic.. The general theoretical and historical context in theatre and cinema history, outlined in the introduction, is followed by discussion in detail of more than 30 films, ranging from 'The Jazz Singer' and '42nd Street' to the work of Bergman and Rivette. Each study draws on reviews, scholarly and crtical writing and script materials, including the drafts of 'The Great Ziegfeld' and (as available) pre-production material for other films. Extensive use is made where appropriate of primary and secondary published sources in German, French and Spanish.
